Bringing the outdoors in

Room with a view

The talented team at Alexander Owen Architects were our partners on this exciting project where crisp, clean lines and attention to detail were paramount.

Originally from New Zealand, our clients were finding life in London was disconnecting them from nature. They wanted to transform the dark rear of their property into a light, open living space which would reconnect them to the outdoors and allow them to enjoy their beautiful mature garden.

Soldier brick course detailing was used on the modern oversized picture window to match the traditional brickwork on the existing windows for a coherent exterior facade

This project is a great example of classic modern architecture where traditional building materials and detailing are combined with hi tech features such as large panel glazing to create a seamless and timeless effect.

A modest side return extension in previously unusable space and the addition of a feature oversized picture window forms a stunning visual connection to the garden.

The most simple looking designs are often the most difficult to accomplish. Fitting the picture window was a complex process which involved meticulous planning.

In order to achieve the frameless effect the brickwork detail had to be carefully thought out and skilfully applied as there was very little margin for error.

The use of sliding patio doors and well placed roof lights allows light to flood in from three sides creating a spacious, bright kitchen and living area without the need to infringe on the outdoor space.

The addition of a window seat provides the perfect spot to relax, enjoy the ambience and take in the view.

A modern shaker style kitchen provides ample storage whilst adding to the spacious feel of the room.

A large kitchen island with sleek Dekton worktop provides a central focal point to the room.

Underfloor heating, restored parquet flooring and sumptuous soft furnishings create a warm and welcoming space.

Large format porcelain floor tiles provide a sleek contrast to the rich tones of the feature kitchen wall tiles and the mosaic detailing in the utility and downstairs WC.

Outside the garden was landscaped to maintain the natural and mature feel. An elegant pagola is centred to the field of vision from the picture window and created in timber to match the window sill, shed and barbecue area.

Framing the landscape to best effect from both inside and out
